Dr. Winakur received his B.A. with honors in Biology from Harvard University. He received his M.D. from the University of Maryland School of Medicine. His post-graduate orthopaedic surgical training was performed at the University of Maryland Hospital. Dr. Winakur was fellowship-trained in sports medicine at the University of Pennsylvania Health System. His medical specialties include sports medicine and general orthopaedic surgery.

He is team physician for The McDonogh School and The Baltimore Bayhawks professional Lacrosse team.
